Message from POLICE CHIEF KEN TRUVER
December 1, 2011
Dear Residents and Visitors to the Castle Shannon Police Website,
This excerpt is reprinted from the AAA Motorist Magazine for November/December 2011.
The holiday season is a particularly dangerous time for motorists. Over the Christmas holiday, alcohol-impaired drivers cause an average of 45 fatal drunk driving accidents per day. Over New Year’s that figure jumps to 54. That’s 66% higher than the rest of the year! Not surprisingly, AAA members consistently rate drunk drivers as their number one safety concern. AAA has launched a new public safety awareness initiative that encourages motorists and passengers to take a stand against impaired driving. Join AAA in the fight to reduce drug-and alcohol-impaired driving by visiting Take The Pledge AAA and taking the pledge to support a culture of zero tolerance for impaired driving. You can easily help spread the word to family, friends and others via social media and personalized e-cards.
For our part in this effort to reduce alcohol related crashes and deaths, we actively seek out impaired drivers on patrol, and though our interaction and participation in the Mt Lebanon Area DUI Task Force.
We will be participating in roving patrols on weekends throughout the winter months and we regularly announce our activities on our Recent News page and on the Traffic Alerts and Complaints Page.
As winter approaches, this is also an opportunity to remind residents about the overnight parking ordinance, which requires that vehicles be removed from Borough streets from 2am-6am 7 days a week. The reason behind the ordinance is twofold: First, the Borough Public Works crews need to be able to clear the roads for travel and to assure emergency vehicles can move about freely; Second, there is a crime prevention component, in that police officers can readily observe vehicles on side streets from main roads and investigate suspicious activity.
Residents with occasional overnight guests or driveway construction may call for temporary permission to park overnight on the street by calling 412.885.9300 x 120. Note: NO PERMISSION to park is ever granted during inclement weather or threat of inclement weather.
Finally, residents are reminded of the Vehicle Code Statute which requires that vehicles are parked with the flow of traffic…”right- hand wheels within 12 inches of the right hand curb”. The reflective marker lights on vehicles are on the rear lenses. It also requires the driver to traverse the oncoming travel lanes in and out of a parking space when vehicles park against the flow of traffic.
The Castle Shannon Police Department wishes a safe and happy holiday season to all of the residents, business owners and visitors to our website. We thank you for your support and friendship during the holiday season and throughout the year, and for allowing us to protect and serve the community of Castle Shannon.
We hope that all readers of this page will pass along our important message NEVER Drink and Drive and ALWAYS Buckle Up.
